An Prediction Market User Profited $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers on Maduro's Downfall.
A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Announcement
Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However the odds had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other individuals also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Legal Questions Grows
Politicians are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
