The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
