Shifting from Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Mixed.
Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that included no new data.
